To this day, bunkers have not lost their relevance. There are still hundreds of thousands of such protective structures in Europe, most of them made of reinforced concrete. “Secret Bunkers presents four installations from the mid-nineteenth century to the middle of World War II. These include the legendary fortress and bunker of Emperor Francis I of Austria in modern Northern Italy, which have never been tested. In the 1930s, the so-called East Wall was designed to protect Germany's border from a perceived invasion by its Polish neighbor. However, when the Soviet army advanced toward Berlin in early 1945, its bunkers proved useless. Beginning in 1940, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill coordinated the war from bombproof bunkers right in the center of London. Along the Atlantic coast of France, colossal blocks of steel concrete were constructed to provide bunkers for German submarines until they were finally forced to surrender.
