Deer include muntjac, red deer, fallow deer, elk , reindeer (caribou), white-tailed deer, roe deer, and moose. The stag, doe and fawn each have their own symbolism. The symbolism is very different from a wolf's, where the wolf acts as a pack animal, the stag always works alone. In Native American Indian cultures, the person who took on the role of the stag was known as an "Elk Dreamer", but in general the deer is, for nearly all shamanic cultures, the symbol of "ecstatic flight". The Sami people for example, "become" reindeer in their minds, hence the myth of Father Christmas. One of the oldest traditional dances of modern day Scotland represents this symbolic flight - the "Highland Fling" - once a wild and vigorous dance of sympathetic magic. But to really ancient peoples, the deer was also a "god". Cernunnos was a horned stag god and he is shown on the Gundestrup Cauldron, on display at the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen.
But perhaps the most important symbolic deer of all is the White Hart - a White Stag that was seen as a messenger from the Otherworld. For those humans who encountered a white stag, there were often profound consequences, sometimes stimulating great spiritual changes within a person.
