Fox Sparrows breed throughout Newfoundland, but you may see them year round in more southern areas of the province. Fox Sparrows inhabit forests, can occasionally be seen in Pippy Park, and eat invertebrates such as; beetles, fly larvae, caterpillars, ants, spiders, and millipedes. They also eat seeds fruits and buds. Fox Sparrows have been seen in Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, Germany, and Italy. Some of these vagrant birds likely made part of their journey by ship after landing to rest on a vessel far from shore. Animals that prey on Fox sparrows include cats and birds of prey such as the merlin. Fox Sparrows are 15 to 19 cm in length, weigh 26 to 44 grams, and and have a wingspan of 26 to 29 cm. They can live up to ten years.
