June 13 Morning Devotional | The Water of Life | Morning and Evening by Charles Spurgeon
Morning, June 13 | “Let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.” —Revelation 22:17 (NASB)
This Morning's Scripture Reading: Revelation 22:10-17 (NASB)
And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. Let the one who does wrong, still do wrong; and the one who is filthy, still be filthy; and let the one who is righteous, still practice righteousness; and the one who is holy, still keep himself holy.”
“Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying.
“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.
Devotional Video Transcript:
Jesus says, “take… without cost.” He wants no payment or preparation.
He seeks no recommendation from our virtuous emotions. If you have no good feelings, if you are but willing, you are invited; therefore come! If you have no belief and no repentance, come to him, and he will give them to you. Come just as you are, and take freely, without money and without price. He gives himself to needy ones.
The drinking fountains at the corners of our streets (In nineteenth-century Britain) are valuable institutions; and we can hardly imagine anyone so foolish when he stands before one of them, and declares, “I cannot drink because I do not have any money.” However poor the man is, there is the fountain, and just as he is he may drink of it. Thirsty passengers, as they go by, whether they are dressed poorly or expensively, do not look for any warrant for drinking; its being there is their warrant for taking its water freely. The liberality of some good friends has put the refreshing crystal there and we take it and ask no questions.
Perhaps the only persons who need to go thirsty through the street where there is a drinking fountain, are the fine ladies and gentlemen who are in their carriages. They are very thirsty, but cannot think of being so vulgar as to get out to drink. It would demean them, they think, to drink at a common drinking fountain: so they ride by with parched lips.
How many there are who are rich in their own good works and cannot therefore come to Christ! “I will not be saved,” they say, “in the same way as the prostitute or the blasphemer.” What! Go to heaven in the same way as a chimney sweep? Is there no pathway to glory but the path which led the dying thief there? I will not be saved that way. Such proud boasters must remain without the living water; but, “Let the one who wishes TAKE THE WATER OF LIFE WITHOUT COST.”
