Clifford Beers (1876 – 1943)was the founder of the ‘American mental hygiene’ movement, a movement whose aim was to improve thetreatment given to the mentally ill. In particular to make it more humane. Beershimself was mentally ill and suffered from bouts of depression andparanoia. He had visions and auditoryhallucinations, olfactory hallucinationsand bouts of mania. In 1900 hewas confined to a private mental institution. He would later be confined toanother private hospital, as well as astate institution. And as a consequence suffered a rebirth experience.
