Salvador Dali was a Spanish surrealist painter, film maker, sculptor, photographer, writer, theatre set and clothes designer. He also designed an entire Tarot pack and provided illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Dali used hypnagogia and trance to help him decide which symbols to put in his paintings. As such he did not use complicated methods, but his paintings are, nevertheless, totally surreal. Thus in this video we have taken a selection of paintings and homed in on just one of the symbols in each painting to provide an explanation. We have included Eggs, Melting watches, the Rhinoceros, Elephants, Giraffes, the Unicorn, the Signs of the Zodiac, many Flowers - for example the poppy, Butterflies and Caterpillars and The Cross.
