A troubling analysis by US Navy Intelligence reveals that Chinese shipyards have 232 times the production capacity as those serving the American navy.

The enormous disparity comes from Chinese shipyards having a solidly diversified income stream, through dominant commercial shipbuilding. The US, by contrast, has no real commercial shipbuilding industry.

This feature makes the US shipyards motivated to sell the most expensive and largest warships, and removes incentives to innovate, or to build smaller, faster warships.
