The Stink

Just as we have ‘Perfumes’ that can be hallucinatory, we can also get hallucinatory stinks – bad smells. Overall, negative olfactory hallucinations can be caused by Illnesses and Pharmaceuticals, and perhaps more controversially negative emotions and events - trauma. In this video, we take a look at the Prescription and OTT (over the counter) medicines that can cause stinky hallucinations and some of the illnesses. But we also look at the effect of 'possession' and the work of a sangoma (traditional healer) from South Africa, whose job it was to expel spirits that had possessed people. This is a form of exorcism, and as the healer says: "When the spirit came out, there was a stink like I have never smelled before, a truly horrible stench that filled the air".
