Rahan.

The son of the ferocious ages.

Episode Eighty-Five.

Story by Lecureux, drawn after Cheret. Page layout by Cheret.

The Wampas without wings.

The hunter had stuck his spear in the ground and was facing the "Gorak" that was gathering himself to pounce.

This hunter is a fool, or he has decided to join the territory of the shadows.

The saber-toothed tiger attacked!
The man was not even moving when the beast tackles him to the ground!
React brother! React!
We do not allow ourselves to be slaughtered like that!

A little courage, "Gorak", if you thirst for blood, take that of a hunter who defends himself!

Page Two.

By not securing the lace of his weapon on his wrist, Rahan had made a mistake.
He paid for it immediately.

A second claw blow knocked him to the ground.
Without a knife, he was at the mercy of the monster

But the man's spear was there, a few steps away.
He plunged at the same time as the beast relaxed.

And this one came to impale itself on the long flint.
Ra-ha-ha!

The son of Crao retrieves his knife from twenty steps further on.
Who are you? Why did you save me?
I am Rahan, the son of Crao.
And Rahan never abandons a hunter to a “Gorak!”

Page Three.

But who are you yourself?
And why do you give yourself as an offering to the gorak?
My name is Harn. But my tribe calls me “The Coward”!

The man remained prostrate and spoke in a muffled voice.
I want to join the territory of shadows because my people banished me from the “Wampa” clan!

For a long time the “Wampas" Stupidly war against those of the forest.
Fights without reason, without aim and without end.
For many moons I have refused to participate.

And that's why mine call me "cowardly"!
But, yesterday they captured a man from the forest clan.
And the sorcerer demanded that I behead the captive.

You are cruel Horka! I refuse to obey your orders!
Then you will be banished, Harn!

Page Four.

And that morning, in front of all my brothers, Horka tore off the skins that make us look like “Wampas.”
And which prove our belonging to the clan.
Go Harn the Coward! You are no longer with us!

I am now a Bat without wings!
A cursed one!
All I have left to do is die!

You were right to want peace!
You were right to disobey cruel Horka!
You must live, Harn!
You must!

A murmur put them on alert.
The wampas will once again start a fight with those in the forest!
See the one leading the way, it is Horka-the-sorcerer!
They say he never knew fear!

Page Five.

Rahan will talk to Horka!
He will ask him to reintegrate you into the clan!
It is useless!
Nothing will erase the shame and humiliation that I experienced!

Disowned by my people, all I have to do is leave this world!
As soon as you are gone, I will throw myself on this spear, like the Gorak!

No, Harn!
You will not do anything!
Smack! Argh!

It cost Rahan to act like this.
But he had no choice. He Tied Up the “Banished”
Harn has a generous heart!
He must live and be rehabilitated by his brothers!

A moment later, by the path of the “Four Hands” he had caught up with the hunters.
Rahan Salutes you, “Wampas”!
He wants to speak to you on behalf of Harn!

Page Six.

Harn?!
We do not want to hear this coward's name mentioned anymore!
Disobeying a cruel order is not cowardice, Horka!

You hear, "Wampas!"
The fiery-haired enemy challenges us!
Kill him!

They say you have never known fear, Horka.
This is what we are going to see!

Oh!
Rahan quickly snatched the spears and threw one at the sorcerer's legs.
Horka jumped aside and was met with a second spear thrown with the same skill.
Argh!

Page Seven.

A third, then a fourth pierced his Wampa “Wings”.
Oh! Argh!

Ha-ha-ha!
I thought you never knew fear, Horka!
You see Rahan could have easily killed you!

But Rahan doesn't steal the life of "Those-Who-Walk-Upright"!
Will you decide to rehabilitate Harn?

Harn's attitude is unworthy of a Wampa!
Cowards have no place in our clan!

Rahan will change your mind, Horka!
As many Wampas climbed towards him.

Page Eight.

The Son of Crao escaped them with his customary agility.
Ah!
What are you waiting for to use your Wampa wings?

Rahan has not convinced Horka, but Rahan has an idea!
Let us hope the forest clan will accept it!

It was two days later that Rahan and the opportunity to act.
Horka was left alone on an island.

When the sorcerer saw a white shape between two waters, he first thought it was a huge fish.
Then he realized.
Rahan! You waited until I was isolated from my people to surprise me, you devil!
But you will not have me!

Page Nine.

The long spear brushed against Rahan who was coming to the surface.
But Horka did not have time to strike a second time.

Oh!
Let us see if you know how to "Crawl on water," Horka!

The other day, you tried to steal Rahan's life.
So yours belongs to him!
But it is for the forest clan to decide!
The Sorcerer swam infinitely worse than the son of Crao.

Shortly after, Rahan pushed his captive into the thickets, towards the clearing of “Those of the Forest.”

A clamor greeted his exploit.
Rahan Succeeded! Rahan has captured Horka!
The chief of the forest clan advanced.

Page Ten.

You will die in a ditch, Horka!
We will deliver you immediately to the executioner!
Carrying his Axe, the executioner was already approaching.

No, I, No!
I thought you never knew fear!

The executioner had raised his ax but seemed to hesitate.
Well, what are you waiting for? Strike! Strike!
For the first time in his life, Rahan encouraged the death of a man.

Strike, since your chief gave you the order!

Horka was on the verge of fainting and the executioner still hesitated.
No! No! I cannot obey this order.

Page Eleven.

Since the executioner refuses to carry out the sentence, you are free, as is customary!

The prisoners fear had been great.
You owe your life to the refusal to obey an order, Horka!
No doubt you will meditate on this!

The sorcerer of the “Wampas” left without daring to look back once.
Thoughts swirled through his head.

He thought of the intense fear he had experienced.
He thought of the executioner whose attitude had saved him.
He thought of Harn, whom he had banished for having had a similar attitude.

Yes, Horka meditated for a long time.
And this meditation will bear fruit because, two days later.

You can come back to the village, Harn!
Horka has decided to rehabilitate you!
You can come too, “Hair of Fire”!

Page Twelve.

I was blinded through pride and hatred, Harn.
Having experienced the same situation, I now know that your refusal to decapitate an enemy was not cowardice.

But an act of generosity!
Come back to us, Harn!
You are worthy of carrying the “Wings of the Wampas.”

As for you, Rahan.
I do not understand you!
You said you would never steal the life of "Those Who Walk Upright."
And you were the most ardent in demanding my death!

Who knows?
For once maybe Rahan wanted revenge!
This was a blatant lie.

But the "Wampas" should never know who Rahan planned this mock execution!
And Horka would never know that this hooded executioner who had spared him was none other than than.
Harn!
