At some point in time, I think we have all experienced a time where someone has perpetually hurt us (be it abuse or otherwise) and knew it was time to say "enough," stand up to them and even separate from their presence.

There are plenty of songs in my back catalog that highlight the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation, so don't think I'm all about severing ties and nothing else, but this song is for those who have had enough and are ready to get away from the hurt.

Another big part of the message of "Drag Me Down" is at the end of the second verse, "Finding my place inside the family of the Son of God who gave His life for me." There is a lot that can be done that can contribute to our healing and knowing that, in Christ Jesus, the Lord has a high opinion of us that doesn't change, He loves us, and will never reject us. Identifying with that love and that belonging can inoculate us from the opinions of other people, and can help protect us from carrying hurt around with us that was dealt to us by others.
