When AI threatens the future of the human race, it's up to Jennifer Lopez's Atlas Shepherd to kick some artificial ass and save the day.

Set in a world with flying cars and robots, Netflix's sci-fi action flick Atlas centers on one woman’s mission to take down the world’s first AI terrorist. In the new trailer, debuting exclusively with Entertainment Weekly, we learn that Agent Atlas has spent years hunting an artificial intelligence known as Harlan (Simu Liu), which was "originally engineered to advance humanity" but has "instead nearly ended it." Despite her deep distrust of machines, Atlas is forced to rely on Smith, an AI voice in her robotic armor (known in the film as an "arc suit"), to survive and complete her mission.

Lopez tells EW she was brought to tears by the “touching and moving story” at the center of all the action. “It’s a story of friendship and learning how to trust; the bond between two beings who connect in disastrous circumstances and teach each other how to be more human,” she says.

Atlas features extended sequences where Lopez interacts solely with the disembodied voice of her arc suit. This presented a unique challenge for the performer: acting without a human scene partner. “It was like doing a one-woman show," she explains. "You’re just there, by yourself, imagining everything because it’s all green screen — there was no set to ground you."

Fortunately, Lopez is no stranger to taking center stage. "As a solo performer who is accustomed to handling difficult workloads, she was especially suited to take on this challenging role," director Brad Peyton tells EW. Noting that Lopez "is a very intuitive actor," Peyton adds, "I tailored my entire approach to capturing her performance."

Part of that involved prompting Lopez as to what her character would be seeing in the scene. "I wanted Brad to yell at me and tell me, 'We're crashing! There are meteors coming at you! They're shooting at you!' Once you had the beats of the scene, there’s a rhythm to it, and I just had to put all of my imagination, all of my emotion, all of my past experiences and visceral instincts into it,” she says.

The trailer also introduces Sterling K. Brown as Colonel Banks, the leader of the arc-suit-wearing Rangers, who seems to save Atlas's life during an attack. “This movie really focuses on individuals' relationships with AI, and Sterling delivers an amazing performance,” Peyton shares.

The director was excited to work with Liu as well, knowing the actor would bring something “fresh and interesting” to the role. "Harlan and Atlas knew each other when Atlas was a child, so the past events between them have shaped Atlas into who she is when we meet her as an adult," Peyton teases about the relationship between the movie’s protagonist and antagonist.

“The heart of Atlas is really about trust and how difficult it is to trust people,” Brad Peyton said of the film, per Netflix. “Atlas is told through the lens of a woman who’s learning to trust after undergoing a trauma that’s upended her life. It’s a reminder of how we have to have deep, meaningful relationships in our lives, in one way, shape, or form. That you can’t do everything by yourself; you have to choose to trust people at a certain point and let them in.”

Lopez added, "I loved that this is a big sci-fi action movie, but at its core, it’s a story of friendship — and a love story, in a way. I always see everything as a love story, but this is a different kind of love between two beings who connect in disastrous circumstances, and teach each other how to be more human.”

Jennifer Lopez Is Also Producing Atlas

Simu Liu is about to move from the sunny, pink dressings of Barbie into the red-hot "mass-murdering, A.I psychopathic robot" realm of Jennifer Lopez's Atlas, and the new movie's villainous tinge got him excited to tackle a new era in his career.

The actor told Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos that his agent initially pitched his role in the upcoming Netflix film as a deliciously dark foray into territory he never thought he'd venture.

"Imagine getting a call from your agent. 'We want you to be in a movie with J.Lo.' What's the kind of movie that appears in your mind? A rom-com! Maid in Manhattan! Like, yes. Sign me up, please!" Liu said on Thursday's episode of Live With Kelly and Mark. "They're like, 'You're trying to kill J.Lo.' I was like, hold on a second, what do you mean I'm trying to kill J.Lo? That's the last thing I want to do."

Liu said he eventually came around to the idea of playing an evil character in the Brad Peyton-directed sci-fi flick, which follows Lopez as the titular agent hunting the world's first artificially intelligent superterrorist.

"I'm playing my first villain role, I'm in my villain era. It's really fun," Liu told Ripa and Consuelos. "Getting to work with Jen is a dream come true. It's not the first image of a J.Lo movie that conjured in my mind, but, yeah, I'd get into it."

Atlas — also starring Sterling K. Brown and Mark Strong — streams May 24 on Netflix.
"The future of humanity is in her hands." Netflix has unveiled the first look teaser trailer for a sci-fi movie called Atlas, starring Jennifer Lopez – making it another star-driven expensive spectacle that will release this summer streaming on Netflix. Yet another artificial intelligence-related sci-fi movie, since it's the big tech trend of the moment, everyone has to make movies about it. Atlas is set in a bleak future, where an A.I. soldier has determined that the only way to end war is to end humanity. Lopez plays a data analyst with a deep distrust of A.I., who joins a mission to capture a renegade robot. When plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it. Along with Lopez, this stars Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla, & Mark Strong. From the looks of it, this is almost a pro-A.I. propaganda piece disguised as a sci-fi movie. The Creator is a bit different, but this seems rather blatant in its message where she must learn to "trust it." Huh. This is a nice teaser, with some awesome VFX shots, but will the rest of it be any good? Only time will tell. Check out the teaser below.

Here's the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Brad Peyton's Atlas, direct from Netflix's YouTube:

Netflix on Tuesday dropped the latest trailer of Brad Peyton’s upcoming sci-fi action thriller Atlas in which Jennifer Lopez plays a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst who faces off against a renegade robot played by Simu Liu.

Portraying a world ruled by artificial intelligence, the two-minute-48-second-long trailer focuses on Lopez’s Atlas Shepherd who has spent years pursuing a renegade robot known as Harlan (Liu). Explosions, widespread destruction, collapsing structures with bullets flying in all directions fill the screen in subsequent scenes before it is revealed that the only way to defeat Harlan is to send Atlas on a mission.

We see Lopez grappling with robotic adversaries while battling fierce winds and raging fires on a hostile snow-covered planet. The trailer ends with gripping action sequences that reach a climax with Lopez's robot unleashing havoc upon Harlan's forces, setting the stage for an intense confrontation.
