How To: Determine if a Radio is Part 90 or Part 95 Certified by FCC
In this video, we go over how to determine if a GMRS radio, commercial radio, or ham radio is part 90 or part 95 compliant. This qualification is based on the type certification it receives from the FCC.
In order to operate within North Georgia GMRS network policies, and to operate legally on any simplex frequency, you must use a radio that is either Part 90 or Part 95 certified.
Use the information in this video to lookup the FCC ID of any new or even used commercial radio you may be considering purchasing.
In this how to video, we cover how to find a radio’s FCC ID - generally on a sticker or label, often found on the back or the bottom of most radios.
We then take the FCC ID and perform a search for that device using the FCC OET database. The Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) maintains official records about all equipment manufacturers and the radios they sell as a matter of public record.
The FCC’s website can sometimes be intimidating to new users, so we’ll show you how to quickly search for the radio, navigate the search results, and to find the grant issued by the third-party lab that conducted the testing certification.
Ensuring that a radio carries part 90 or part 95 certification prior to using it on the air is an important step in becoming a legal and responsible GMRS operator.
