How to start composting in your backyard

Composting food scraps and yard trimmings at home can make your garden and houseplants pop by turning dry, dead dirt into nutrient-rich soil. It also keeps about a quarter of waste from heading to landfills. “You can be a lazy composter if you don't have a lot of time in your life, or it can be your joy in life,” said Jenny Lohmann, program specialist at the Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District. Finished compost can be ready as quickly as in one month or, more typically, up to four months. Lohmann is leading free backyard composting seminars around Cincinnati in April and May.
