Meet Polly, the AI pollster that wants to predict elections using social media.

Polly is no traditional pollster. Polly is an artificial intelligence system built by Ottawa-based startup Advanced Symbolics Inc. (ASI) that scrapes public data from social media networks to predict election outcomes. It accurately predicted the outcomes of both the 2019 Canadian federal election and the 2016 Brexit vote. Peter Gombos, director of a documentary on Polly called Margin of Error, speaks with Day 6 host Brent Bambury.

Black Swan
The black swan theory or theory of black swan events is a metaphor that describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often inappropriately rationalized after the fact with the benefit of hindsight. The term is based on an ancient Roman saying expressing the European presumption that black swans did not exist until Dutch mariners saw them in Australia in 1697, and the term was then reinterpreted to mean an unforeseen and consequential event.
