Mother Mariana of Jesus Torres was a nun who went through the unimaginable—she suffered in Hell for five years to save the soul of a fellow nun.

During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries there lived in Quito, Ecuador, Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres, a Spanish nun of the Conceptionist Order.

One day, Mother Mariana was sitting quietly in a corner of the room, when she saw a vision of hideous monkeys approaching La Capitana, one of the nuns who was the leader of a rebellion in the convent. The mouths, eyes, and nostrils of the hideous creatures vomited fire that they poured into her heart and the hearts of her rebellious followers.

Mother Mariana saw that this unhappy nun, and several of her followers, would not be saved. So Our Lord appeared to her and proposed the unimaginable—He told her there was only one way to save this soul from the eternal flames of Hell that she well deserved for her many sins: This way was for Mother Mariana to agree to suffer five years in Hell for La Capitana.
Well, Mother Mariana trembled to her very core, but she accepted.

Sometime later, Our Lord appeared again to Mother Mariana. He reminded her that the time had come for her to pay the price for the salvation of La Capitana’s soul. He let her know that next day, after receiving Holy Communion, as soon as the Eucharist dissolved within her, she would enter Hell.

The next day, as she approached to receive her God in Holy Communion and to leave Him for five whole years, she felt like her heart would break. Soon she felt a terrible pain as if her heart had been wrenched from her chest. From that moment she became totally insensitive to God.
Meanwhile, as her soul suffered all the torments of the damned, her five bodily senses were steeped in incredible torture. Her body was like a glowing ember. It burned without being consumed while she was in unspeakable pain. Her eyes beheld the most horrible infernal scenes while the most atrocious blasphemies constantly assaulted her ears.

Her sense of smell was plagued by all the filth of humanity, and her sense of touch was tormented by sharp points penetrating to the very center of her body. Her palate was tortured by a horrible, unknown taste, while demons forced melted Sulphur down her throat. At the same time, the demons beat her head to the point of spilling her brains, thus inciting her to wrath and despair. Can you imagine?

Soon, she lost the notion of the time and was convinced that it would be endless. She suffered all this while living her daily life in the convent. Incredibly, she never opened her lips with a single complaint to the community. Only the priest who directed her and the other foundresses knew what Mother Mariana endured.

But five years later—as promised—Mother Mariana was praying when suddenly she cried out and fell as if dead. She was unconscious for a long time and then finally she opened her eyes, which filled with tears of relief. Her hell was over. She gradually recovered her color and health.
Not long after, La Capitana fell sick. She confessed all her sins and died calmly, assisted by Holy Mother Church. Mother Mariana of Jesus saw the sister’s judgement, where she was shown that her salvation was owed to Mother Mariana’s five years in Hell.

So, is this story a fairy-tale? An incredible allegory? No, it is all factual and true. Mother Mariana left a full written account of her life at the command of her superiors. Our Lady appeared to her several times under the title of the Mother of Good Success and made prophecies about the twentieth century which absolutely came true.

So many people who are on the path to Hell could experience a conversion through Our Lady’s grace, if they only knew her message. America Needs Fatima is a campaign to capture the heart and soul of America with the Message of Our Lady of Fatima. In 1917, Our Lady asked for prayer, penance and other measures to avoid chastisement of suffering, famines, and wars. She also promised that:
