#TheHunger9 (#Hunger9) are 9 men from the @CircleOfBrotherhood organization based in Miami, Florida. In the same vein as Mahatma Ghandi, Cesar Chavez, and Dick Gregory; #TheHunger9 launched hunger strike known as #OperationHungerStrike in an effort to raise the level of conversation and personal responsibility to end gun violence in their community. For 21 days (March 9, 2019 - March 30, 2019) these 9 men set up an encampment and lived outside at the historic corner of NW 62nd St. & 12th ave in Miami where the McDuffie riots of the 1980s that burned down the Black Business section in Miami started. The site is also across the street from the Liberty Square Public Housing Project also known as the (in)famous Pork and Bean Projects.

#TheHunger9 lived outside on that corner for 21 days drinking only water. They hosted scores of visitors, conducted numerous workshops, and used the awareness and power created by a Hunger Strike to take a stand against gun violence. A hunger strike is a method of non-violent resistance or pressure in which participants fast as an act of political protest, or to provoke feelings of guilt in others, usually with the objective to achieve a specific goal, such as a policy change.
