South Africa: Deadly building collapse leavesdozens trapped | BBC News

Rescuers in South Africa are searching for survivorsafter a five-storey apartment block under constructioncollapsed on Monday, killing five people and leaving atleast 50 trapped.

Officials in the city of George, Western Cape province,say 26 people have been pulled from the wreckageand taken to hospital but there were dozens moreworkers on the site when the building collapsed.

The cause is under investigation. Video footage takennearby showed a huge cloud of dust as the building fell.

At the scene on Tuesday morning, emergency workerswere taking it in turns to work the small site, removingconcrete blocks and debris by hand.
