Hallo, this is Hans the Dutch guy with Much Dutch, and this time we will see how to pronounce in a regular Dutch accent the main canals of Amsterdam. Most of them have the word “gracht” in them, with that lovely Dutch G. Just pretend something is stuck in your throat: ggggg.

Ok, here we go:

Herengracht. Herengracht. HE-REN-GRACHT. Herengracht.

Prinsengracht. Prinsengracht. PRIN-SEN-GRACHT. Prinsengracht.

Keizersgracht. Keizersgracht. KEI-ZERS-GRACHT. Keizersgracht.

Singel. Singel. SIN-GEL. Singel.

There are still over 160 other canals in the city, some with water, other ones filled in. But these are the main canals, grachten, in the very heart of Amsterdam, the grachtengordel, the canal belt.
