A car rally was held in Sydney, Australia to honor Victory Day and Russian President Vladimir Putin; however, the leader was perhaps somewhat surprising. Ivan Syrsky, stepson of the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrsky, led the rally, and cited his respect for Vladimir Putin and his great-grandfather, who fought for the Soviet Union against the Nazi invasion in the Second World War. He also congratulated Putin on his inauguration for his fifth term as president.

Despite threats from the Ukrainian Armed Forces and press, Syrsky Jr. has participated in the rally for each of the last ten years, according to Russian activist Semyon Boykov, known as the ‘Australian Cossack.’ The rally’s tradition involves driving around Sydney with Russian flags and St. George’s ribbons, and normally at least some police interference – this year at least one person was fined for displaying a Russian flag.
