In the past century, service jobs have surged, now constituting nearly 80% of the workforce, up from less than a quarter. When we mention service jobs, we often visualize tasks like serving coffee, fetching clothing, or assisting with luggage. While these services may seem like luxuries, they undeniably add value, whether through a satisfying beverage, a stylish outfit, or timely baggage delivery (saving us from needing a physio appointment). However, the term "service sector" encompasses a wide range of roles, from call center representatives to CEOs. Nowadays, finding a job outside this sector is challenging, as many positions require specialized certifications. This fact is crucial to remember for later discussion.

The expansion of the self-serving service sector and the subsequent proliferation of non-essential roles appear puzzling. One would expect the efficient free market to eliminate those who contribute little, penalizing companies burdened by their salaries while rewarding more streamlined organizations. Or so it seems, right?
