The Symbolism of Clay, Pots, Pitchers, Jugs and "the Potter"

Pots, jugs and containers are all symbols for "form" the material and thus visible part of the world. The "empty" space that these vessels contain is then "spirit" that which animates the vessel. If the vessel contains water (which symbolically represents spirit) the symbolism is perhaps more complete.
