2 Crazy Unknown Musicians + 1 Lucky Studio Break = Smash Hit Song

This unlikely story follows a song's journey from studio experiment to Canadian classic rock anthem. Songwriters David Diamond and Mister Zero of The Kings had two promising songs. Merging them into a catchy bridge, they stumbled upon "This Beat Goes On/Switchin' to Glide."

Legendary producer Bob Ezrin, fresh off Pink Floyd's "The Wall," recognized the song's potential but identified a clunky transition. A flurry of songwriting followed, resulting in the now-iconic seamless flow of the song.

Despite being unknowns, The Kings landed a record deal with Elektra thanks to a lucky break. Legend has it, teenagers outside the label, captivated by the music wafting from an open office, danced to the song, convincing executives it was a hit.

Initially, the focus was on "Switchin' to Glide," but the band's push for the full version – including the captivating bridge – resonated with radio stations. The song climbed the charts, peaking at #43 on the Billboard Hot 100. It dominated Canadian airwaves, reaching the Top 10 on Toronto's CHUM FM.

"This Beat Goes On/Switchin' to Glide" transcended its origins, becoming a Canadian classic. It achieved Gold status, earned The Kings a JUNO nomination, and continues to be a fan favorite.
