The government of Indonesia plans to permanently move nearly 10,000 inhabitants following a sequence of powerful eruptions from the Ruang volcano, which has raised concerns about the safety of residing on the island in the future, a minister announced on Friday.
Approximately 9,800 individuals reside on Ruang island, situated in the province of North Sulawesi. Over recent weeks, all residents have been compelled to evacuate as the volcano continues to emit glowing lava and columns of ash extending kilometers into the atmosphere.
This week, authorities escalated the volcano's alert status to its highest level, leading to the closure of the provincial airport in Manado. Additionally, warnings have been issued regarding the potential for a tsunami if sections of the mountain collapse into the surrounding waters.
Following a cabinet meeting on Friday to address the volcano's activity, Coordinating Human Development Minister Muhadjir Effendy disclosed plans to construct hundreds of "basic yet permanent" residences in the Bolaang Mongondow area to facilitate the relocation process.
"As per President Joko Widodo's directive, we will erect houses that adhere to disaster-resilient standards," he stated, noting that the designated site lies approximately 200 km (125 miles) away from Ruang island.
