Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt have some catching up to do in Mother of the Bride.

The two play former college sweethearts, Lana and Will, who unexpectedly reunite in Thailand at the destination wedding of their respective children: Lana's daughter Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) and Will's son RJ (Sean Teale).

Netflix's newly released 2-minute trailer gives a brief snapshot of their awkward encounters as they try to make the trip and wedding day special for their kids, all while navigating their own baggage — and potential remaining romantic feelings.

"It's time to take care of me a bit less and take care of yourself a little bit more," Emma tells Lana near the end of the trailer. "I just want you to be happy."

Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), the upcoming rom-com also stars Chad Michael Murray, Rachael Harris, Wilson Cruz, Michael McDonald, Tasneem Roc and Dalip Sondhi.

In an interview surrounding an exclusive first look at Mother of the Bride last month, Waters, 59, told PEOPLE that part of the reason Bratt fit the role of leading man Will is his wide appeal.

"I find that romantic comedies, they often go for men who aren't liked by other men in the male leads," he said. "And since I am a man, I [want] somebody who is not only going to be beloved with women, but also men are going to see the movie and see, 'Oh, I also like that guy. And that's a guy that I could see being friends with.' "

Shields, who is also a producer on the film, told PEOPLE that Bratt is "pretty easy to be a love interest" — and that she was also thrilled that his wife of over 20 years, Talisa Soto, came to Thailand for part of the shoot.

"She's such a refined, beautiful woman," said the actress, 58. "She epitomizes that, and I was so happy she wanted to come and spend the first portion of [filming] with us."

Cosgrove, 30, told PEOPLE that the cast got to "spend pretty much every day together for the six weeks we were in Thailand" filming. "And one of the special things about making the movie was — since we were so far away from home, all of us, and in a new place — I really feel like we all got to know each other pretty fast," she added.

For Shields, filming with her castmates "felt like theater ... because we were all thrown together in such a foreign environment," she recalled. "We were together all the time."

"We just all stayed together, which was really nice. And we all lived right near each other [on location]," Shields explained.

Waters said that while "there's obviously a lot of comedic tension between Benjamin and Brooke's characters" and romantic storylines to follow, "the real emotional heart of the movie is between the mother and the daughter."

"Frankly, the scene where Emma goes to visit Lana in her bedroom the night before the wedding is the most emotional scene in the movie for me," he said.

Cosgrove said her "strong relationship" with her own mom "definitely played into" how she approached her character Emma's dynamic with Shields' Lana, as she "had a lot to work with."

"But also Brooke's just really warm and loving, and she's kind of the type of person that, even if you've only talked to her for an hour, you feel like you've known her a long time," the iCarly actress added. "She's just really warm."

Mother of the Bride is streaming May 9 on Netflix.

Mark Waters (He’s All That, Mean Girls, Freaky Friday) is the director of Mother of the Bride, while Robin Bernheim (the Princess Switch trilogy) penned the script. Shields, also a producer on the film, gave a lot of credit to Waters and Netflix’s Director of Original Film, Christina Rogers, for creating stories “for women over 40 to be in a rom-com.”

“[Christina has] been the champion of really pushing and standing behind these stories for women over 40 to be in a rom-com that’s not just all ... yes, we’ve got the focus on the young, beautiful, fresh love, and we want that, but she’s not overlooking my demographic. And to have that wish fulfillment of another chance at love and all that,” the actress told People in March 2024.

Meanwhile, Cosgrove told the publication that her “really strong relationship” with her mother “definitely played into” her character Emma’s dynamic with Shields’ character Lana. “But also Brooke’s just really warm and loving, and she’s kind of the type of person that, even if you’ve only talked to her for an hour, you feel like you’ve known her a long time,” the iCarly actress said. “She’s just really warm.”

Here’s everything to know about Mother of the Bride, from the film’s plot to when you can watch the wedding movie on Netflix.

NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: Nicki Minaj performs onstage during the 2023 MTV Video Music ... [+]GETTY IMAGES FOR MTV
Nicki Minaj is one of a very small number of musicians in today’s industry who can reliably sell music. Whether it be her albums or singles–or remixes of those singles–whenever the rapper has something new to share, her fan base shows up by purchasing her work in huge quantities.

One of Minaj’s most recent singles skyrocketed when it came to sales last week. “FTCU” has become a huge win once again on the charts thanks to a sizable sales figure–one which is up significantly from the period prior.

On Friday, April 19, Minaj re-released “FTCU” as a remix–or in her lingo, a “Sleezemix.” The reworked cut features new vocals from Sexxy Red, Travis Scott, and Chris Brown. Their collective star power, combined with Minaj’s die-hard following, have ensured that the track sold extremely well.

In the last tracking week, “FTCU” sold 14,655 copies. According to Luminate, that’s up from the 650 copies it sold the period before. That’s a growth of 2,154% from one week to the next.

All those sales–and renewed interest on streaming platforms–help “FTCU” return to half a dozen Billboard charts this week. The tune blasts back onto lists like the Digital Song Sales, R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs, and Hot Rap Songs, among others.

“FTCU” is also on the rise on other lists that it doesn’t need to return to, as it never disappeared. The cut is up on another six rankings, including some that focus on airplay. Minaj has been promoting the single for months, and this new remix has likely helped it grow at radio as well.

Minaj’s “FTCU” performed so well, it manages to rise on the Hot 100. That wouldn’t normally be a huge feat, but this week, that chart is inundated with songs from Taylor Swift’s new album The Tortured Poets Department. “FTCU” is one of only two tracks that manage to force their way up the list, fighting against the 31 debuts from Swift.

Mother of the Bride is written by Robin Bernheim (The Princess Switch trilogy) and directed by Mark Waters (Freaky Friday, Mean Girls).

Shields plays Lana, the mother of bride-to-be Emma (Cosgrove). When the family travels to Thailand for Emma's wedding, Lana discovers the groom's father (Benjamin Bratt) is her college flame who broke her heart years ago.

Chad Michael Murray and Rachael Harris also star.

Mother of the Bride premieres May 9 on Netflix.

Brooke Shields, Miranda Cosgrove and Benjamin Bratt will star in “Mother of the Bride,” a new romantic comedy from Netflix. Mark Waters, who previously helmed “Mean Girls” and “He’s All That,” directs from a script by Robin Bernheim, the writer of “The Princess Switch” franchise.

According to the official logline, “Mother of the Bride” is a generational comedy of errors. It reads: “When Lana’s daughter Emma returns from a year abroad in London, she drops a bombshell on her mother: she’s getting married. On an island. Next month! Things only get worse when Lana discovers that the mystery man who stole her daughter’s heart just so happens to be the son of the man who broke hers years ago.”

Shields is best known for her starring roles in “Pretty Baby” and “The Blue Lagoon,” as well as her long-running sitcom “Suddenly Susan.” She has been making headlines recently with the release of the documentary “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” which deals candidly with the exploitation and sexualization that Shields endured as a child actress. Other recent credits include the Netflix film “A Castle for Christmas.”

Cosgrove’s resume includes starring roles in “iCarly” and “Despicable Me.” She also hosts the CBS television show “Mission Unstoppable With Miranda Cosgrove.” Bratt’s credits boast a starring role in “Law & Order,” as well as work on “Poker Face,” “Traffic,” “Miss Congeniality,” “Dead for a Dollar” and “Doctor Strange.”

Shields is represented by UTA, Untitled, Jill Fritzo PR and Ziffren Brittenham. Cosgrove is represented by Gersh and Untitled. Bratt is represented by CAA, Circle of Confusion, Viewpoint and Myman Greenspan.
Brooke Shields is treading new water in Mother of the Bride.

The actress stars in Netflix's upcoming romantic comedy as Lana, who gets the surprise of her life at the destination wedding of her daughter Emma (Miranda Cosgrove).

"Lana's daughter Emma returns from abroad and drops a bombshell: She's getting married. In Thailand. In a month!" teases a synopsis. "Things only get worse when Lana learns that the man who captured Emma's heart (played by Sean Teale) is the son of the man (played by Benjamin Bratt) who broke hers years ago."

Aside from starring in the movie, Shields, 58, is also a producer — and gives a lot of credit to director Mark Waters, Netflix and the company's Director of Original Film, Christina Rogers.

"[Christina has] been the champion of really pushing and standing behind these stories for women over 40 to be in a rom-com that's not just all ... yes, we've got the focus on the young, beautiful, fresh love, and we want that, but she's not overlooking my demographic. And to have that wish fulfillment of another chance at love and all that," Shields tells PEOPLE.

Shields says aside from feeling the story championed by Netflix executives, Rogers and Waters, "I appreciated it from Robin Bernheim, who wrote the script."

"They weren't so scared of the concept that then they had to overstate it or make me the extreme menopausal woman," she tells PEOPLE. "Or the extremely-too-emotional woman, or whatever the clichés are."

Waters — who previously worked with Murray, 42, on Freaky Friday (2003) — tells PEOPLE he was so happy to reunite with the One Tree Hill actor for Mother of the Bride, and that much of the cast and crew were basically like one big family.

"If you're shooting in Los Angeles or New York, you finish [working] and go home to your family and you don't see [your coworkers] on the weekends. And here, it's like, "Oh, what are we doing this weekend? What are we doing for dinner tonight? Are we gonna get some tequila shots?' " he says.
"That made for ease and comfortability, because they literally are people who are getting used to hanging out with each other a lot," Waters adds. "And that's a wonderful thing that comes about from being on destination location shoots."

Cosgrove says there are some aspects of Emma and RJ's (Teale, 31) wedding that she'd be totally into snagging for her own potential future nuptials.

"I love the wedding dress that I got to wear," says the School of Rock actress, who plays a social-media influencer in Mother of the Bride. "It's not super extravagant and crazy, but it was just really comfortable and beautiful, and that was really fun getting to try different wedding dresses. I would definitely copy that dress."

She also appreciated the smaller size of the event. "I feel like if I were to get married, I'd want it just to be my family and really close friends, and I like it when people have smaller, intimate weddings like that," Cosgrove tells PEOPLE.

Mother of the Bride is streaming May 9 on Netflix.
Romantic comedies like Mother of the Bride are making a comeback, providing more romance and magic for viewers.
The film follows Lana as she navigates unexpected surprises and past love connections at her daughter's wedding.
Director Mark Waters and the ensemble cast, including Benjamin Bratt, promise a heartwarming and comedic experience on Netflix.
Romantic comedies have been experiencing some form of renaissance in recent times, as exemplified by the commercial success enjoyed by Anyone But You, proving that we just want a bit more romance, with Lindsay Lohan's Irish Wish putting back the magic in rom-coms. Next up is Brooke Shields, and she is taking us to paradise for her next romantic feature, Mother of the Bride. Shields will star as a mother who gets the surprise of her life at the wedding of her daughter. Mother of the Bride is set to arrive on Netflix on May 9, and ahead of the film's debut, the streamer has released a brand-new trailer.

The trailer begins by taking us to paradise. To Thailand. Shields' Lana has arrived for the wedding of her daughter, Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) to her lover, RJ (Sean Teale). "I can't believe my little girl is getting married," Lana notes off-screen, and while she won't get to spend time with her daughter here, there will be a lot to keep both busy. It's the perfect location, there is love in the air, nothing could possibly go wrong, right? Wrong. Lana soon finds out that RJ is the son of Will (Benjamin Bratt), her college sweetheart who broke her heart back in the day. What follows is a brief taste of the many awkward encounters they endure, as they try to make the trip and wedding special for their kids, all the while navigating any potential remaining romantic feelings between one another and their own baggage. "It's time to take care of me a bit less and take care of yourself a little bit more," Emma tells her mother towards the end, as she notices her struggles. "I just want you to be happy."

Taking to the camera as director for this one is Mark Waters, whose credits include classics like Mean Girls and Freaky Friday. Waters' most recent directorial effort came in a remake of the 1999 film She's All That, with the release of He's All That in 2021. The rest of the ensemble cast for Mother of the Bride include Chad Michael Murray, Old Dads' Rachael Harris, Michael McDonald, Wilson Cruz, Tasneem Roc, and Dalip Sondhi. The script is penned by writer Robin Bernheim, with Shields serving as an executive producer alongside Oliver Ackermann, Galen Fletcher, Robin Bernheim Burger, Amanda Phillips, Jimmy Townsend, and Vince Balzano.

The Perfect Leading Man

While Shields and Bratt's characters will have to overcome generational comedic errors before, presumably, getting back together. Bratt has been lauded by Waters as the perfect leading man to bring the role to life. "I find that romantic comedies, they often go for men who aren't liked by other men in the male leads," director Waters explained. "And since I am a man, I [want] somebody who is not only going to be beloved with women, but also men are going to see the movie and see, 'Oh, I also like that guy. And that's a guy that I could see being friends with.' "

Mother of the Bride hits Netflix globally on May 9. Watch the trailer above.
