Brazil was inhabited by indigenous peoples for millennia before Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral claimed it in 1500. The colony thrived on sugar and gold but relied heavily on African slave labor. Brazil became the seat of the Portuguese Empire in 1808 when the royal family fled Napoleon’s invasion. It declared independence in 1822, becoming an empire under Emperor Pedro I and later Pedro II. The country transitioned to a republic in 1889 following a military coup. Throughout the 20th century, Brazil experienced periods of economic boom and political instability, including a military dictatorship (1964-1985). Today, it's a major democratic, multicultural nation with significant influence in Latin America.
