Genesis 1:1 - Is the traditional traditional reading grammatically problematic?

Traditionally, Genesis 1:1 has been translated: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." But many recent commentators have argued that this rendering is not grammatically defensible. What is the basis of this claim? Are there any counter-arguments to it?
