In the Indian state of Kerala, Kozhikode—also referred to as Calicut—is a city situated on the Malabar Coast. It was once an important hub for trading Indian spices, which is why it was given the moniker "City of Spices." With roots in antiquity and the Middle Ages, when the Samoothiris (Zamorins) governed an autonomous country, the city has a rich history. As a gateway for Chinese, Persians, Arabs, and Europeans, notably Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who landed here in 1498 and opened a trading route between Europe and India, Kozhikode played a crucial part in the spice trade.

Because of the city's advantageous position, which promoted trade and cross-cultural interactions, its economy and culture flourished. It was formerly a well-known cotton-weaving hub that gave Calico cloth its name. These days, Kozhikode is well-known for its educational establishments, such as the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK), and its picturesque natural environments, such as the Kakkayam Valley and Kozhikode Beach. The official languages of the city are English and Malayalam, which reflects the diversity of its cultural past. In 2023, Kozhikode was recognized for its literary and cultural accomplishments when it was admitted to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
