Afghanistan exports 67 tons of saffron worth 49 million US dollars: Ministry
The Ministry of Industry and Trade reports that 67 tons of saffron worth 49 million US dollars were exported last year.
Akhundzada Abdul Salam Jawad, the ministry's spokesman, said the saffron was exported to India, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Saudi Arabia, the US, Indonesia, Turkey and the UK.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade spokesperson added: "In fiscal year 1402, about 67 tons of saffron worth $49 million were exported, mainly to India, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Saudi Arabia, the US, Indonesia, Turkey and the UK."
Saffron, an important Afghan export, is mainly grown in the provinces of Herat, Balkh, Kandahar, Sar-e Pol, Daikundi and Uruzgan. Saffron from Herat in particular is known for its outstanding quality and robust presence on the world market.
The National Saffron Workers Union (NSWU) explained that the cost of transporting saffron abroad is high and that attention must be paid to lowering prices.
Nasir Ahmad Nabil, a member of the NSWU, said: "The few problems we have are related to transportation. We used to use freight services through tanneries, which made transportation more convenient.

Kabul Dreams, the first Afghan rock band, established itself in 2008 in Kabul, Afghanistan. The band consists of Qardash (lead singer and guitarist), Jai Dhar (drummer) and Siddique Ahmad (bassist). Kabul Dreams has paved the way for a modest but growing rock scene in the country, which is rebuilding itself after decades of war. The band’s motivation to perform came from their own love for music, but also from a public hunger for a new life after war – a life that included new music and art.
