The Work of Faith: Controlling What We Say and Godly Counsel (James 3)
What we say reveals who we are. By controlling everything we say, we can control everything we do (see vv. 2-8). James is showing us a prime example of a relationship between what is known as faith and work, which is the site of spiritual warfare. We even see how James warns against some becoming Christian teachers (v. 1) because we are astonished at how hypocritical and even contradictory our speech can be (vv. 9-12).

In his wisdom, James raises a red flag about the role of counsel in our lives. He warns that what may appear as wisdom could be tainted by pride and other sinful passions. Faith becoming self-centered can lead to self-serving actions, even in the guise of 'helping' others. James reminds us that true wisdom is a gift from God, and its authenticity is proven through action (v. 13). Sensual (v. 15; Greek 'psychike).

As we conclude our study on "The Work of Faith: Controlling What We Say and Godly Counsel" from James 3, let us reflect on the profound connection between our words and faith. James paints a vivid picture of the power and responsibility inherent in our speech, urging us to recognize its capacity to reflect the depths of our hearts.

James illuminates the crucial role of controlling our speech in the battleground of spiritual warfare, where faith meets action. Our words, he teaches us, are not merely expressions but manifestations of our innermost convictions. By mastering our speech, we gain mastery over our actions, aligning ourselves more closely with the will of God.

Moreover, James cautions against the allure of self-centered wisdom and the dangers of misguided counsel. True wisdom, he reminds us, derives not from human pride or selfish desires but from God Himself. This divine wisdom guides us towards selfless action and serving others with compassion and humility.

So, as we walk away from this study, let us be aware of the profound impact our words can have and strive to wield them with wisdom, grace, and love. Let us seek the proper knowledge from above, allowing it to shape our words and lives as we journey onward in faith.
