SHA-256, or Secure Hash Algorithm 256, is a hashing algorithm used to convert text of any length into a fixed-size string of 256 bits (32 bytes). Originally published in 2001, SHA-256 was developed by the US Government's National Security Agency (NSA).

The NSA only admits to developing the algorithm behind the encryption of Bitcoin but that a Japanese guy - and not the NSA - developed Bitcoin all by himself. The NSA wouldn't be developing an algorithm like that if they didn't have plans to create Bitcoin because people usually make things with the intent to use what they've created. It's not hard to connect the dots.
