Police said, on Tuesday March 26, 2024 at approximately 5:09 p.m., the Fullerton Police Department dispatch Center received a 911 call from an employee at the Wells Fargo Bank located at 141 West Bastanchury Road.
The employee explained that a man later identified as 57 years old Scott Thompson
was in the bank claiming to have a bomb and demanding money.
At the time, the bank was open and there were employees and a customer inside the business.

The first officer arrived at the bank within 2 minutes of the call being dispatched and began coordinating the response of additional personnel and resources.
Additional officers arrived and established a containment perimeter around the bank.
An officer was able to make contact with an employee in the bank via telephone.
That employee was able to provide updates regarding Thompson's actions and explained Thompson was sitting at a desk and they were going to give him the money he demanded.

About 10 minutes into the incident the employee told the officer the bank personnel would be
placing $58,000 in a box with DPS written on it and Thompson would be walking out of the bank shortly after.
Thompson exited the bank holding a white box and began walking away from the bank
doors, officers immediately gave him commands to put his hands up and to stop.
Thompson failed to follow the instructions he was given and instead turned around and started walking back towards the bank doors. Police said, fearing Thompson may be re-entering the bank
with an explosive device and as he neared the bank doors an officer involved shooting occurred.

Immediately after the officer involved shooting, officers began to approach Thompson to take him into custody and render Medical Aid, however because Thompson indicated he had an explosive device they secured the area and requested the assistance of the Orange County bomb squad.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department Hazardous Devices Section is made up of 18 members and averages 600 to 800 requests for service yearly, which include rendering safe 50 to 80 improvised explosive devices each year.

The Orange County bomb squad responded and used a tactical robot to examine the device and was determined to be an item constructed to resemble an actual explosive device, referred to as a facsimile device also known as a Fax.

Thompson was pronounced deceased at the scene once it was rendered safe by the Orange County bomb squad.

Police said that Scott Thompson had an extensive criminal history and was on federal probation for armed bank robbery at the time of this incident. Furthermore, he had prior federal convictions for armed bank robbery and escape. And a state conviction for robbery.
