Koi are colorful, ornamental versions of the common carp. The word "koi" comes from the Japanese word for "carp". Modern Japanese koi are believed to have originated in early 19th-century Japan when rice farmers caught, kept, and bred wild, colorful carp. Koi can live between 25 and 35 years, and their scientific name is Cyprinus rubrofuscus "koi".
