There is a false history about the origin of this film. The false claim often mistakenly peddled. Is that this film was produced in Nazi Germany as an anti-semitic piece of propaganda. And this film does contain some anti-semtic tropes however.
The truth is, that this film was actually produced in 1933 premiering in 1934 and was the first major motion picture for "20th Century Studios". It was made in response of hitler rising to power and growing anti-semitism in europe.
