John McGuire promised he wouldn't run for Congress... (VA-05)

John McGuire pledged to constituents in 2023 that he was running for Virginia State Senate and would support Bob Good's re-election campaign. What changed? Just days after winning his state Senate election, John McGuire announced a run against Bob Good, prompting outrage from Virginia conservative leaders:

The Amelia County GOP says: “He completely promised that he wouldn’t do this, and now people don’t trust him, because he lied. He bold-faced lied to their faces,”...“People are very frustrated. Bob Good is well loved in the 5th District, and it is a waste of time, money and resources at the primary level, when we should be spending it going up against the Democrats in November.” -Cardinal News, 1/17/24

The Goochland County GOP says: "I can’t take his campaign seriously, and the people in Goochland can’t either. I don’t want any part of it, there’s too much at risk for these kinds of shenanigans.”
