Epictetus (c. 50-135 AD) was a Greek philosopher who was born a slave in Hierapolis, present-day Turkey. He studied philosophy under the Stoic philosopher Musonius Rufus, and later became a teacher of Stoicism in his own right. Epictetus is known for his emphasis on personal ethics and the importance of living in accordance with nature. He believed that people should focus on what they can control, such as their thoughts and actions, and should not worry about things beyond their control. His teachings were recorded by his student Arrian in the "Discourses" and "Enchiridion," which are still widely read today. Despite facing persecution and exile, Epictetus remained committed to his philosophy and his students, and is remembered as one of the most influential Stoic philosophers in history.
