KP42 NEWS Independent Media Hub

When events happen, independent journalists need support. The KP42 News van will offer them on-site facilities to record and livestream multi-camera interviews, perform voiceovers, edit footage, upload content, recharge batteries, and connect with others. It will also give them a place to warm up, or cool down. Free of charge!

Originally owned by an NBC station in Raleigh, North Carolina, this news van was put into service in 1999. One of its first major assignments was covering Hurricane Floyd as it struck the east coast of the USA in September of that year. The van was retired by the station in 2015 and was used as a private video production vehicle. In September of 2022 it was imported into Ontario for preservation. The vehicle has a 40’ telescoping mast with aerial camera, 4000-watt generator, 100 PSI air compressor, landline telephones, and onboard battery-power system. Most of the original video equipment from 1998 is still in place.

While it is in excellent condition, the truck has sat idle for many years and is in need of a tune-up. Modern high-definition video equipment is being installed for livestreaming and real-time playback of web content via a Starlink internet system mounted to the roof.
