Hallo, this is Hans the Dutch guy with Much Dutch, and this time we will see how to pronounce in a regular Dutch accent the days of the week. We will run through all of them once, and then each day individually.

All the days have that harsh Dutch G sound, the gggg, but in most cases you can soften them up a bit.

You will also hear the EI, which is for many languages uncommon, but with a bit of practice you will get there. And the same goes for the rolling R. You don’t have to overpronounce it.

Ok, let’s run through the week once:

Maandag

Dinsdag

Woensdag

Donderdag

Vrijdag

Zaterdag

Zondag

Let’s start again with maandag.
As with all the days of the week, the emphasis is always on the first syllable:

MAAN-dag

Maandag

Maandag

Ik moet maandag naar school.
I have to to school on Monday.

Maandag

Next up is dinsdag.

Dinsdag

Emphasis on DINS:

DINS-dag

Dinsdag.

Mijn vergadering is op dinsdag.
My meeting is on Tuesday.

Dinsdag

Woensdag is next.

Woensdag.
Emphasis again on the first syllable:

WOENS-dag

Woensdag

Ik heb op woensdag een afspraak.
I have an appointment on Wednesday.

Woensdag.

Fourth day of the week is donderdag.

Emphasis on DONDER:

DONDER-dag

Don-der-dag

Donderdag.

Ik moet donderdag naar de tandarts.
I have to go to the dentist on Thursday.

Donderdag.

Then, vrijdag.

Slight emphasis on VRIJ

VRIJ-dag

Vrijdag.

We gaan vrijdag naar de bioscoop.
We are going to the cinema on Friday.

Vrijdag.

Zaterdag is next.

Again, the first syllable gets the emphasis:

ZAterdag.

ZA-TER-DAG

Zaterdag.

Laten we zaterdag naar Amsterdam gaan.
Let’s go to Amsterdam on Saturday.

Last day of the week is zondag.

ZON-dag, the emphasis on the first syllable.

ZON-DAG.

Zondag.

Het gaat zondag regenen.
It is going to rain on Sunday.
