Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Judge Joseph Madenspacher told Justo Smoker at his sentencing hearing for a string of armed robberies in 2007 that he could have fashioned a sentence that would have kept him in prison for twice as long, if not for the rest of his life, according to Lancaster Online reporting at the time. Why didn’t he? Smoker would go on to sexually assault and strangle to death innocent Amish girl Linda Stoltzfoos whom he followed in his car as she walked home from church in June 2020. Judge Madenspacher said he imposed a sentence that ensures "society is protected, but that you could still come out and lead a reasonable life." How wrong he would be. Smoker served the minimum on his 2007 sentence and was released in February 2019. By June 2020 Linda Stoltzfoos was dead in a ditch after Smoke strangled her with his shoelaces.
