After a career in corporate America, where Don and his family moved around the country, he and his wife, Carol. moved to a city in Texas which she had chosen. Carol had suffered from depression for many years and was unable to let go of the memories from childhood that forever haunted her. Never diagnosed, she definitely experienced the highs and lows of bipolar disease.
Having enjoyed a 46 marriage that worked around those emotional swings, Don’s life was turned upside down the day he found Carol lying on the kitchen floor, and later realized that she had taken a massive overdose of the anti-depressantd she had been taking for years.
Any loss of a spouse is an overwhelming experience, but one due to suicide adds another layer that touches even more emotions.
Don knew he needed help, so he checked out several grief support groups (both in person and online) and others for single seniors – to be around widows and widowers who had experienced their own losses. He also searched and found a therapist experienced with suicide.
Those first few years were like being in a fog; but eventually, he saw a little light.
Over the years, that light has gotten brighter, and Don has learned how to live with that eternal hole in his heart. Life goes on and does get easier – in time.
He now tries to offer insights to others suffering grief, as he received during his darkest hours from those who experienced it before him.
