A clear pattern is seen in these cases, which have now acquired an epidemic proportion:

1. Girls are identified and targeted during their daily routine, like going to & from school, or via social media (Instagram & Facebook being favorite hunting grounds)

2. Often times a pseudonym is used to fake a Hindu identity - like here the accused Md. Sahil pretended to be a Hindu named 'Sonu'.

3. Girls are trapped emotionally starting from a very young age, their confidence won gradually, as they are slowly weaned away from their family and lured to elope. The normalization of dating culture among teens via Bollywood, OTT and online influencers is putting them at risk and enabling predators.

4. Fake marriages in dodgy Arya Samaj 'mandirs', like happened in this case, have been reported multiple times. This is a serious issue, and needs a massive clean up from Arya Samaj and Hindu society.

5. Complicity of entire Muslim families in many such cases is another disturbing reality. Out of 5 victim families in cases of grooming/stalking/murder/rape that HinduPost visited recently, in 4 cases the families of the Muslim perpetrator directly participated in the crimes or expressed their support for him afterwards. Here, the victim faced pressure to convert and severe physical abuse from the perpetrator and his family, as she kept refusing to convert or eat non-veg, offer namaz.

6. Many Love Jihad victims end up being trafficked. In this case, the girl was asked to go on a trip to Nepal just with the 'mother-in-law' - a clear red flag that she could be trafficked, which is when she made her final escape.

7. Many Love Jihad victims undergo deep psychological trauma, and often exhibit signs of Stockholm syndrome. Entering a relation and getting married is a big step for a Bharatiya girl, and many succumb to the pressure despite discovering they have been tricked. They try to adjust with their lot in life, and stay on in abusive relations out of shame or fear of rejection from parents. In this case too, we sensed that the victim still hasn't fully mentally recovered from her ordeal, despite having returned to her parents home around 18 months ago. She remains confined to her home, due to fear of the accused.

8. Law enforcement and other state agencies are structurally and attitudinally not designed to combat these crimes. Even though the girl called a local govt helpline and told them about the forced conversion pressure, they just counselled both parties to get back together. Till date, no proper legal action has been taken against the accused, or the Arya Samaj 'mandir' where the fake marriage was carried out. Notions of 'secularism' and political correctness have become excuses for authorities to play down the scale of these crimes and even suppress victims.

9. Hindu society lacks a support structure to tackle these crimes, and pre-empt them. Secularism and policies of the Indian State have broken down the communal bonds that existed earlier.

10. Love/Grooming Jihad perpetrators often target multiple victims. In this case too, the girl is still being taunted by her 'husband' who keeps sending her his photos with other girls. He is also harassing the victim's father, demanding the girl be 'returned' to him. Experience gained in targeting one girl after the other gives them confidence and makes them deadly predators. Some common tactics they use to emotionally manipulate the target - sell fake dreams, threats to do self-harm or harm the victim and her family, brainwash by his friends and family, blackmail using intimate photos/videos.

11. It is clear that such targeting of Hindu girls has clear sanction within large sections of Muslim society. We have seen umpteen cases where victims have recounted how they were religiously dehumanised and treated as nothing more than sex objects. The dehumanization of 'kafirs' preached by Islamist clerics, the promise of 'jannat' as reward for those who convert non-Muslims, the branding of non-hijab wearing girls as 'rape worthy' - all of this is creating a toxic mindset which is playing havoc with our social fabric. Once the social norms that act as an internal check on committing crimes get distorted, it becomes easy to manipulate the target using any means possible. The only solution is to reinforce the right social norms.

12. Both Hindu and Muslim societies need deep introspection to end this predation.
