Dad to run marathon after leukaemia diagnosis
Stephen Hughes, a 47-year-old father from Penrhyn Bay, Conwy, faced a life-altering diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) after enduring severe back pain. Despite enduring rounds of intensive chemotherapy and blood transfusions, Stephen grappled with debilitating weakness and exhaustion, struggling to walk more than five minutes. His treatment journey brought about hair loss, nausea, and a deep sense of frustration and isolation as he fought to uphold the promises he made to himself during chemotherapy. Yet, Stephen's unwavering determination prevailed, as he gradually rebuilt his strength through sheer willpower and exercise. Now in remission, he embarks on an inspiring quest to participate in the London Marathon, rallying support for Leukaemia UK and encouraging others to prioritize their health.
