The Harms of Indigenous Identity Fraud

There is a growing trend in Canada that is picking up momentum as desperate and fed-up Canadians look for an easy out of their troubles. Those selling fake status give false hope that this status will exempt them from the law and some go as far as to claim there is a new republic of Canada.

What many may not understand is the harm these "cards" pose to the legitimate Indigenous people of Canada. This can result in a loss of opportunities meant for Indigenous peoples and has a negative impact to Indigenous culture as non-Indigenous people are "replacing" legitimate Indigenous people.

“There are few things that are more valuable, more important, to a person than their identity,” Taylor says. “In situations like this … you’re not just taking our identity. You’re replacing us.” Drew Hayden Taylor in the article, The “Pretendians” exploiting Indigenous communities through identity fraud. The bigger question... are these groups pushing the fake status cards helping to facilitate land grabs through UNDRIP?
