Party priests they paint apocalyptic pictures
And servile pundits fertilize the soil with endless fear
While sainted scientists make heretics of all the non-believers
And speech crusaders make the faithless disappear

In the congregation there are some who see
That they are…

Creating problems and
Then claiming they alone provide solutions.

A zealous handful screaming hymns of retribution
Is made to seem a mobilizing throng.
Ardent acolytes who fancy themselves to be arbiters of truth
Pretend that they can do no wrong.

But ivied walls and palaces
And all the pelf of power and privilege
Hide a hollowness that no pretense
Of virtue can conceal

In the factories and the fields
There waits a multitude of sovereign souls
Who won’t be made to kneel

Then the congregation gets up off their hands
And a rising nation finally understands.
