After his discovery, a new breed of robots were created. They are dubbed 'Reploids'. Reploids worked accordingly with humans in harmony, however the Reploids began to malfunction and some rebelled against the humans. Those who malfunction and cease to work correctly are called 'Mavericks'. To combat this tyranny, an organization that specializes in the extermination of the Mavericks are known as 'Maverick Hunters'. X, along with ace Maverick Hunter Zero, embark on a mission to hunt down the Mavericks and terminate the leader of the Maverick Rebellion, Sigma.
