Like many people, Lucy Boynton uses music to reminisce on special times in her life. So much so that she felt like she was holding up a mirror while playing her time-traveling character in “The Greatest Hits,” who discovers that certain songs can literally transport her back in time.

“It was a full spectrum of emotions that, as an actor, I think is so appealing to get to dive into,” Boynton told Variety at the premiere for the film, which debuted on Hulu on April 12, at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on Monday. “I love the way that the film handles grief and loss of self. It’s such a grounded take on that. Even if you take away the sci-fi element of this film, it still stands out as a psychological investigation of what music does to us.”

Harriet is launched back through time while listening to specific tunes that trigger memories of her boyfriend Max (David Corenswet), who died in a car accident. But soon enough, her time traveling collides with a burgeoning new love interest (Justin H. Min), whom she meets at a grief group. Min said he was grieving the loss of a loved one when he read the script, which helped draw him to the project.

To help the cast bond, Ned Benson, the director, writer and producer on the film, held karaoke nights at his house. (Min tells Variety his song of choice was “Where Is the Love?” by Black Eyed Peas.)

“Let me be clear, [Benson] forced us. None of us did this voluntarily,” Min joked. “He locked the door. He didn’t allow us to leave until we sang. ‘Where Is the Love?’ has a little rap, it has a little melody and gives me a bit of everything to showcase my horrible karaoke abilities.”

Boynton, who opted for “Shallow” from Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born,” said despite their hectic and busy filming schedule, the cast and crew still wanted to be around each other on their few days off during the weekends.

Nelly Furtado, who appears briefly in the film, crafted the original song “Never Lost” with Ryan Lott. She told reporters that approaching a song for a film is very different than her other musical endeavors, and that while she didn’t participate in any karaoke nights, her go-to is any Boyz II Men hit.

"I love how music can do that… pull you back to some moment in time." Searchlight Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for an indie romantic drama called The Greatest Hits, the latest film from filmmaker Ned Benson (of The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby films). Premiering today at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin before it lands on Hulu for streaming in April. Written and produced by Benson, Harriet experiences a unique connection between art and reality. She discovers that specific songs have the power to transport her back in time, driving her to relive special moments with her ex-boyfriend. Her time-traveling begins to bleed into the present when she meets someone new. Throughout the journey, she explores the mesmerizing link between music and memory, facing her with difficult decisions of whether altering the past is a choice worth making. Lucy Boynton stars with Justin H. Min, David Corenswet, Andie Ju, Retta, Austin Crute. This looks great! Not really a romcom at all, more of an emotional story about music, grief, and love.

Harriet (Lucy Boynton) finds art imitating life when she discovers that certain songs have the power to transport her back in time – literally. While she continues to relive the past through romantic memories of her former boyfriend (David Corenswet), her time traveling collides with a burgeoning new love interest in the present (Justin H. Min). As she takes her journey through the hypnotic connection between music and memory, she wonders – even if she could change the past, should she? The Greatest Hits is written and directed by American indie filmmaker Ned Benson, director of The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Him & Her & Them trilogy of films previously, plus a few other shorts. Produced by Stephanie Davis, Shannon Gaulding, Cassandra Kulukundis, Michael London, Ned Benson. This is premiering at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival this month in the Narrative Spotlight section. Searchlight will release Benson's The Greatest Hits in select US theaters on April 5th, 2024, then streaming on Hulu starting April 12th this spring. Any good?

The trailer for The Greatest Hits teases a unique time travel romance with a musical connection.
The movie stars Lucy Boynton as a young woman torn between a new love interest (Justin H. Min) and her late ex-boyfriend Max (David Corenswet).
Boynton's potential breakout lead role could elevate her career to new heights.
The trailer for the upcoming movie The Greatest Hits showcases a unique time travel romance. The movie was written and directed by The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby's Ned Benson, who also has a story credit on 2021's Black Widow. It follows Harriet (Lucy Boynton), who discovers that listening to certain music can allow her to travel back in time, which leaves her torn between her current love interest (Justin H. Min) and her ex-boyfriend Max (David Corenswet) as she ponders whether she can or should change the past.

Searchlight Pictures has now unveiled the official trailer for The Greatest Hits on the same day as the movie's premiere at SXSW. Check it out below:

After kicking off by showing the way Harriet time travels, the trailer immediately raises the stakes by revealing that Max died in a car wreck, and she can potentially reverse his fate, but doing so might make it so that they never met. When she meets and begins to bond with Min's character, another grief-stricken artistic soul, her romantic life gets even more complicated but never less musical.

The Greatest Hits Could Be Lucy Boynton's Breakout Lead Role

The Greatest Hits could have the potential to become Boynton's breakout lead performance. She has held roles in major projects before, including being part of the Barbie cast in a brief appearance as Proust Barbie, but most of her major roles have been co-leads. This includes starring opposite Will Poulter in the Agatha Christie miniseries adaptation Why Didn't They Ask Evans? and being part of the ensemble cast of Netflix's The Politician.

The Greatest Hits features a Politician reunion, as Corenswet also held a major role in the Ryan Murphy show.

Boynton's career could reach new heights if the movie becomes a hit, something that is entirely within the realm of possibility. The trailer, while showing that the movie is carving its own narrative path, recalls previous similar titles that have blended science fiction and romance, including the Rachel McAdams time travel movies The Time Traveler's Wife and About Time. While not every movie was a runaway success, the major examples of the crossover genre all made their money back. Below, check out how the aforementioned movies and other comparable titles fared at the box office:

Title

Budget

Worldwide Box Office

Somewhere in Time (1980)

$4 million

$9.7 million

The Lake House (2006)

$40 million

$114.8 million

The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)

$39 million

$101.3 million

About Time (2013)

$12 million

$88.5 million

The Age of Adaline (2015)

$25 million

$65.7 million

The precedent set by those titles shows that The Greatest Hits has a strong potential to connect with a wide audience, even though the majority of its release will take place on streaming as a Hulu movie. It could very well follow in the footsteps of the platform's previous streaming hits, including Prey and Palm Springs. The latter title was a romantic comedy set in a time loop, so its success especially could show that The Greatest Hits and Boynton both have bright futures.
