One of the earliest pandemic stories that appeared in western media outlets and terrified its readers was the tale of Wuhan Dr. Li Wenliang. The official story was that Dr. Li had tried to warn his friends about a novel virus that seemed to be spreading, a virus similar to SARS. For doing this, he was reprimanded by Chinese authorities and forced to sign a confession. However, tragically, he would soon fall victim to the disease that he tried to warn people about. He would soon be hospitalized, and later died. His death caused an outrage among the Chinese people who demanded more accountability and honesty from their government around the disease.
