What people wrongly call hell today is really "Hades" a temporary holding place for the wicked dead beneath the earth. (Luke 16.)

At the Great white throne this place will be emptied and the wicked, being formally sentenced will be cast into the lake of fire (The true and EVERLASTING Hell.)

Think about it this way, when a criminal gets arrested for a crime committed they get sent to the local jail. After some time there and at a time appointed, they are called before a judge and formally sentenced to the penitentiary after being read their list of crimes.

Hades is the current local jail for lost souls, and one day they will be called before the Judge (Jesus Christ). They will be read their sins (The books will be opened.) Then they will be formally sentenced to the penitentiary (Lake of fire.)

Death holds the body and Hell (Hades) holds the soul. This is why death and Hell (Hades) will be cast into the Lake of fire (The soul and body.)

Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
