Iran and Israel faced off at the United Nations Security Council, hours after Tehran launched an unprecedented attack on Israeli territory. While the US has asked Israel to de-escalate, prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's war cabinet appears set on a counter-strike. Israel's ambassador to the UN said that Iran had crossed a red line which gave it a right to retaliate at a time of its choosing. Iran, on its part, says the attack was designed to limit civilian casualties and escalation. Can Israel launch an attack without western help?
