We Bet You've Never Used Dandelions Like Musical Instruments

Do you remember those golden days before the massive spread of Internet and technology, when people actually went out to meet and talk to each other and when kids used to “play outside”? When we were children, we depended on the lore of the older generations (even just a few years older meant eons of skills and knowledge ahead, remember?) who loved to pass on tricks of the trade. We listened open-mouthed and then practiced for hours just how to make Jacob’s Ladder out of yarn or build a fort in the woods. These are the tricks we loved and now spend time in our cubicles in front of the glowing screens reminiscing and trying to find out why we yearned to grow up at all.

Did you use to make whistles out of blades of grass? If you did not, or have forgotten, you need to search for the perfect blade of grass, pluck it from the ground, stretch it holding it between your thumb and palm and blow. Okay, this might have been an easy one, did you know there is another nature’s whistle out there? We bet you never used dandelions like musical instruments! Dandelions are those pesky weeds, those yellow flowers that grow back so very quickly and spread to every nook and cranny.

One woman created a video to show everyone how it is done, and she does not want the dandelion horn to die out!

“I happened to notice a stout dandelion had sprung up in the flower bed next to a dentist’s office. I was touched by the dandelion’s persistence and was reminded of how I used to blow on dandelion stems to make a horn-like sound as a kid growing up in Idaho. Now in my late 50’s, I realized there might be people who did not know this was possible, so after plucking the dandelion and testing it out to make sure it would play, I stood next to the dentist’s office and made my video."
