Koi (鯉, English: /ˈkɔɪ/, Japanese: [koꜜi]) or specifically koi comes from Japanese which means carpet fish. More specifically, it refers to nishikigoi (錦鯉), which more or less means carpet fish embroidered with gold or silver. In Japan, koi are a kind of symbol of love and friendship. This is because koi is a homophone for another word which also means affection or love. Koi fish are a type of fish including the Amur carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) which has attractive and docile ornaments. Often this fish is considered a variant of the goldfish (Cyprinus carpio) even though they are genetically different. Koi are usually kept as decoration for the purpose of beauty and good luck inside the house and outside the house (koi pond or water garden, because koi fish are believed to bring good luck. Because koi fish are related to goldfish, and therefore in Indonesia many people call them koi goldfish .

Types of koi fish are differentiated depending on their color, pattern and size. Some of the color elements are white, black, red, yellow, blue and cream. The most well-known type of koi is the Gosanke type, which consists of Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku.
